Utah/Senate Bills/2020/174
SB 174 of 2020 is a bill which prohibits elective abortions. Abortions are still permitted in the cases of rape, incest, or severe birth defects.[1]
On June 24 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, making S.B. 174 effective in the state of Utah.[2]
On June 24 2022, Third District Court Judge Andrew Stone issued a 2 week restraining order, preventing the enforcement of S.B. 174. On July 11 2022, Judge Stone granted a request by Planned Parenthood for a preliminary injunction against S.B. 174 going into affect until litigation surrounding the law is completed. Judge Stone is quoted as stating "They're going to obtain abortions through less accessible means, which involves health risks," and "Some women will likely resort to unsafe and illegal methods, which involve risks to not only the woman but obviously any life or potential life she's carrying."[3]
